“…The biggest project of this nature in Southern Africa was the CleanStar initiative in Maputo, which aimed to use ethanol (from a distillery in Beira) produced from cassava. Over 300,000 ethanol stoves were sold, but their use has been minimal-typically only for rapid cooking such as making tea-with households still doing most of their cooking with charcoal (Mudombi et al 2016). The ethanol production component of CleanStar has now collapsed.…”
