In this study, the thermal behavior of microwave hydrothermal char of sewage sludge (MTC) was compared with dried sludge (DS) and char produced by electric hydrothermal treatment (ETC). The retention ratio of volatile matter in MTC was raised by 51.2% compared with in HTS, while their dewaterability by centrifugation were very close. The kinetic parameters of thermal disposal process of the DS and hydrochars were determined from TG analysis. It was found that the activation energy of combustion was reduced from 44.20 kJ/mol of DS to 47.29 kJ/mol for ETC. For MTC, the activation energy was slightly decreased (43.22 kJ/mol). In addition, the highest weight loss rate (0.49%/min) in combustion was also found for MTC. The evolution of gaseous nitrogen compounds was obtained by FTIR analyzer combined with TG. The results indicated that in devolatilization process, the emission of NH3, the main precursor of NOx in combustion, was postulated to higher temperature for MTC. In conclusion, MTC has a better combustion performance and a close dewaterability compared with to ETC. This study provided a new choice for the pre-treatment method of sewage sludge before combustion.

Evaluation of Pyrolysis Reactivity, Kinetics, and Gasification Reactivity of Corn Cobs after Torrefaction Pretreatment

To reveal the effect of torrefaction pretreatment on pyrolysis and gasification reactivity of biomass, corn cob was first subjected to torrefaction pretreatment in a fixed-bed reactor at various reaction temperatures. The pyrolysis reactivity, kinetics, and gasification reactivity of torrefied corn cob were systematically assessed by various methods, proving that torrefaction pretreatment has a substantial influence on the physicochemical properties of corn cobs. The O/C and H/C molar ratios of corn cobs considerably drop with the increasing torrefaction temperature, and their higher heat-ing value (HHV) and energy density rise as well. It is found that torrefaction improves the pyrolysis reactivity of corn cobs because hemicellulose degradation is more severe than cellulose degradation during torrefaction, resulting in an increase in the percentage of cellulose in torrefied corn cobs. However, the severe depolymerization, polycondensation, and carbonization reaction during torre-faction of corn cobs at 280–300 °C can lead to a significant decline in the pyrolysis reactivity of corn cobs. Torrefaction pretreatment increases the pyrolysis activation energy of corn cobs, in addition to decreasing the char gasification reactivity of corn cob. The average char gasification reactivity of corn cobs drops when torrefaction severity increases. The passivation of active sites on the char surface may cause condensation and carbonation reactions of corn cobs during torrefaction. These findings provide new sights into the reasonable design of efficient torrefaction methods for appli-cation prior to pyrolysis and gasification of biomass.

Design of a Self-Management Solar Pyrolysis Packed-Bed Reactor by Coupling Thermal Energy Storage

A new packed-bed reactor coupled with thermal energy storage (TES) for solar pyrolysis of biomass is developed to overcome the shortcomings of solar energy. The numerical model of a 3.5 kW reactor is formulated by coupling heat and mass transfer balances to chemical kinetics for biomass pyrolysis. It is solved numerically by finite element techniques. The model is applied to analyze the influence of the storage component on the thermal and chemical performance of the pyrolysis process. A new criterion Y defined as the ratio of the char yield and the effective solar power input is proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of solar power input. Under different solar radiation conditions, the coupled TES reduces the solar energy consumption for the char production by over 16%. The storage component can alleviate the overheating and thermal cyclic stresses on the absorption surface. As compared to the non-TES design, the new design can decrease the temperature fluctuation on the absorption surface for over 300 K during solar intermittencies. Moreover, the latent heat in the storage component makes the pyrolysis process stable. Under short-term interruptions, the variation of char yield in the terminal temperature range of 623−673 K is as large as 34.9% in the non-TES design, and it can be decreased to 16.5% after coupling TES. This value can also be decreased from 66.8% to 17.0% under long-term interruptions by coupling the storage.
