Multi-drug-resistantEnterococcusspp. as a cause of non-responsive septic synovitis in three horses

Abstract: Increased awareness of MDR pathogens in equine wound infections is essential. Prompt diagnostic testing, appropriate therapy, infection control strategies and on-going monitoring and management are vital to limit the clinical impact of these organisms.

“…Streptococcus infantis is described as a commensal of the upper respiratory tract in human medicine (Bek-Thomsen et al 2008). The pathogenicity of Enterococcus durans was not clearly demonstrated in horses (Wintzer 1999), while the E. faecalis is associated with endocarditis (Bolin et al 2005), with the microflora of chronic wounds (Freeman et al 2009), and with synovitis (Herdan et al 2012).…”

“…While we learn about antimicrobial resistance in human and small animal patients with methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin‐resistant enterococci (VRE), methicillin‐resistant S. pseudointermedius (MRSP), multidrug resistant Pseudomonas sp. and pan‐resistant NDM‐1‐containing Enterobacteriaceae, there is also conclusive evidence of the emergence and impact of resistance in equine patients . Hospitalisation and antimicrobial drug administration have been shown to increase resistance to antimicrobial agents and multidrug resistance of Escherichia coli in equine faeces as well as S. aureus on the skin of horses .…”
