Multi-energy spectral CT: adding value in emergency body imaging

Abstract: Most vendors offer scanners capable of dual- or multi-energy computed tomography (CT) imaging. Advantages of multi-energy CT scanning include superior tissue characterization, detection of subtle iodine uptake differences, and opportunities to reduce contrast dose. However, utilization of this technology in the emergency department (ED) remains low. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to illustrate the value of multi-energy CT scanning in emergency body imaging.

“…FORCE dual-energy CT represents an extremely advanced spiral CT, with high density and time resolution (24,25). In addition to two- and three-dimensional recombination like ordinary spiral CT, its unique pure-spectrum photon energy purification technology enables dual-energy imaging, which allows for more accurate energy-and-material separation (10). Using spectral purification technology, the radiation dose can be effectively reduced while meeting the diagnostic requirements.…”

“…Dual-energy CT iodine quantification has been applied in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant renal tumors for tumor classification, and the majority of the machines are less advanced dual-energy CT (1012). FORCE dual-energy CT allows pathological grading of renal tumors by quantitative determination of substance and energy separately.…”

“…In regard to the limitations of spectral CT, it may be that performing multiple spectral reconstructions can be expected to increase the reconstruction time and expense of archiving additional images. In addition, reviewing additional images on dedicated thin client servers may increase radiologists' interpretation time [17].…”
