Multi FBG sensor-based impact localization with a hybrid correlation interpolation method

Abstract: To locate the impact source of a composite material structure with a series of Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, a hybrid correlation interpolation (HCI) method is proposed, in this paper, based on a weighted correlation analysis and a unidirectional cubic spline interpolation. First, the signals collected by FBG sensors are preprocessed on the frequency domain to reduce noise interference. Second, the impact similarity map is built by using the weighted cross-correlation value to estimate the location of the… Show more

“…SHM is particularly crucial for re-usable space structures to ensure their structural integrity. In this regard, researchers have investigated different topics such as fatigue effects [ 11 , 12 ], impact damage [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ], and delamination [ 17 ], with a focus on different sensing techniques to capture the behavior of composite components throughout their complete life cycle [ 18 , 19 ]. Within this context, this paper explores the influence of low Earth orbit (LEO) conditions on the performance of embedded fiber FBGs for measuring the deformation and temperature of re-usable launcher components.…”

“…Kim et al [10] proposed a method for locating impact sources by comparing the normalized cross-correlation between a reference database and the acquired impact signals. Du et al [11] proposed a positioning method based on weighted correlation analysis and one-way cubic spline difference. Firstly, the collected signals were preprocessed, then weighted cross-correlation values were used to establish impact similarity maps, and then one-way cubic spline interpolation was used to further subdivide the similarity maps and finally determine the impact location.…”
