Multi‐method Marble Provenance Determinations: The Carrara Marbles as a Case Study for the Combined Use of Isotopic, Electron Spin Resonance and Petrographic Data*

Abstract: A multi‐method approach, based on petrography, stable isotope data and electron spin resonance spectroscopy for assigning the provenance of white marbles, is presented. A total of 11 experimental variables has been used, including the quantitative measurement of the sample colour and its homogeneity. On this basis we attempt to distinguish the three main quarrying basins of the Carrara district, that is, Torano, Miseglia and Colonnata. Such discrimination, extremely uncertain on the basis of the single techniq… Show more

“…At present this is being pursued by extending the database to the carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios [4]. EPR spectroscopy also could be exploited more fully by considering additional paramagnetic impurities such as free radicals or structural defects [18].…”

“…Among these the most important and widespread are certainly minero-petrographic studies [16], the determination of isotopic ratios [10,13], and trace element analysis [19]. Sometimes these and other methods have been combined together [4,20] and now it is generally recognized that multi-method approaches are necessary to reduce the uncertainties to the minimum possible extent and to attempt detailed assignments within single quarrying sites.…”

“…They are listed in Table 1, where their meaning is also briefly described. The measurements were carried out following exactly the methods and the standardization procedures used previously for the quarry samples and discussed in detail elsewhere [1,2]. The spectroscopic variables, whose values are more prone to experimental errors, were measured twice, using their average for the subsequent analysis.…”

“…Conventionally optical microscopy of rock thin sections has recently been supported by cathodoluminescence (CL) studies, allowing distinction amongst marbles containing trace amounts of various elements in carbonate minerals [7]. The commonly employed analytical approach combines bulk and/or trace element chemistry and isotopic studies [8]. The latter technique has been successfully employed to denote major source areas of white Mediterranean marbles [9].…”
