Multi-Objective Optimal Design of a Building Envelope and Structural System Using Cyber-Physical Modeling in a Wind Tunnel

Abstract: This paper explores the use of a cyber-physical systems (CPS) "loop-in-the-model" approach to optimally design the envelope and structural system of low-rise buildings subject to wind loads. Both the components and cladding (C&C) and the main wind force resisting system (MWFRS) are considered through multi-objective optimization. The CPS approach combines the physical accuracy of wind tunnel testing and efficiency of numerical optimization algorithms to obtain an optimal design. The approach is autonomous: exp… Show more

“…For instance, ANNs can be used to expand existing aerodynamic databases and help cover a wide range of possible experimental configurations. Further, ANNs can enhance the efficiency of newly developed cyberphysical methods (e.g., Whiteman et al, 2018) for investigating and optimizing the performance of civil infrastructure systems under wind hazards. Future work will further expand the capabilities of the current ANN model by incorporating additional input parameters, such as wind direction, roof slope, and building aspect ratio (Chen et al, 2003;e.g., Bre et al, 2018).…”

“…The literature introduces the incidence matrix CPS modeling technology of the distribution network. This paper uses an incidence matrix-based modeling technology to accurately model the layer structure of the distribution network CPS and allocate the physical entity layer, the physical information coupling layer, and the information system layer to form the CPS unit model of the entire distribution network [ 11 ]. The literature introduces that a cyber-physical system refers to the system formed by the close connection of computer, communication, and physical process [ 12 ].…”

“…When a dangerous situation is detected, it sends a signal to the field workers in time to let the staff make safety protection, so as to reduce the adverse effects of accidents on the construction site. The CPS technology is mainly divided into three layers [16]: the physical layer, the network layer, and the information layer, as shown in Figure 2.…”
