Multi-objective optimization of thermoplastic CF/PEKK drilling through a hybrid method integrating NSGA-II and TOPSIS: an approach towards sustainable manufacturing

Abstract: Carbon-fibre-reinforced-polyetherketonketone (CF/PEKK) has attracted increasing interest in the aviation industry due to its self-healing/recycling properties. However, its machining performance is not well understood and there is a lack of optimization study for minimizing its hole damage and improving the production efficiency. Here, we report the first multi-objective optimization study for CF/PEKK drilling. A hybrid optimization algorithm integrating NSGA-II and TOPSIS is deployed to obtain the Pareto solu… Show more

“…With a tungsten carbide drill, a cutting speed of 700 rpm and feed rate of 400 mm/min give the highest hole quality and lowest energy consumption. To achieve optimal outcome considering both delamination damage and production efficiency, our group [73] carried out the first multi-objective optimization study on FRTP drilling (see Fig. 13 (c)), where a hybrid optimization algorithm integrating Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and Techniques for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was proposed.…”

“…Manufacturing industry is one of the most significant industries that contribute towards the global socio-economic growth. As the world seeks to reduce carbon emissions to meet the urgent environmental targets, there has been an unprecedented demand for the deployment of high performance/lightweight materials such as carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) in various manufacturing sectors, including energy [1], automobile [2] and aerospace [3].…”
