Multi-Omics Analysis of Anti-Inflammatory Action of Alkaline Extract of the Leaves of Sasa sp.

Abstract: Efficient utilization of alkaline extracts of several plants for the treatment of oral diseases has been reported. To investigate the mechanism of anti-inflammatory activity of alkaline extract of the leaves of Sasa sp. (SE), multi-omics analysis using metabolomics and DNA array was performed. Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were treated for IL-1β to induce inflammation (detected by PGE2 production in culture medium) in the presence or absence of SE. Both IL-1β and SE showed slight hormetic growth stimulatio… Show more

“…Alkaline extract of Sasa sp. inhibited IL-1 β -induced prostaglandin E2 in human gingival fibroblasts [ 25 ]. Kim et al prepared a cellular inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) model with coculture of human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells and RAW264.7 cells [ 26 ].…”

“…On the other hand, alkaline extract such as SE showed slightly higher anti-UVC activity. This is possibly due to the presence of p-coumaric acid (degradation product of lignin) identified by metabolomics analysis (20).…”

“…Pathogenic viruses such as HIV and HSV come with an array of complexities in the oral cavity, and therefore, keeping a clean mouth is essential for living longer with a high QOL. Oral intake of SE significantly improved the symptoms of oral lichenoid dysplasia (as evidenced by the reduced area of white steaks and the decline of the salivary concentrations of interleukin-6 and -8) [ 47 ], possibly by its potent anti-inflammatory activity [ 48 ].…”
