Multi-Pharmaceutical Activities of Chinese Herbal Polysaccharides in the Treatment of Pulmonary Fibrosis: Concept and Future Prospects

Abstract: Pulmonary fibrosis is a fatal chronic progressive respiratory disease, characterized by continuous scarring of the lung parenchyma, leading to respiratory failure and death. The incidence of PF has increased over time. There are drugs, yet, there are some limitations. Hence, it is of importance to find new therapies and new drugs to replace the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis. In recent years, there have been a great number of research reports on the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharides in… Show more

“…Traditional Chinese medicine takes a holistic approach, emphasizing that “the lung is a delicate organ, and imbalances in lung heat or cold can lead to weakness.” In the context of IPF, deficiencies in Qi, yin, and yang in the lungs are believed to exist and to be further influenced by factors such as phlegm, heat, stasis, and toxins ( 66 , 67 ). Treatment for IPF focuses on a dialectical approach, with a multi-target, multi-level, low toxicity nature, to address symptoms, affect molecular expression, and regulate microenvironmental balance ( 68 , 69 ).…”

“…In traditional medicine in the East and West, herbal prescriptions that are composed of several medicinal plants have been used to alleviate fibrotic diseases of the major organs, including the liver, kidneys, and lungs [11][12][13]. Interestingly, plant extracts with these effects contain several polyphenolic compounds in common, and studies on the pharmacological effects of these compounds are attracting attention [14][15][16].…”

“…Yupingfeng (YPF) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine composed of Astragali Radix, Atractylodes Macrocephala and Radix Sapshnikoviae (Liu et al, 2021a). Yupingfeng polysaccharides (YPP) are the major active component of the traditional Chinese medicine Yupingfeng, which has been shown to promote growth, antiin ammatory, and regulate intestinal microbial balance (Su et al, 2020;Wu et al, 2021). At present, there are many types of research on the impact of YPP on terrestrial animals, however, there have been only a few studies on the impact of YPP on aquatic animals.…”
