Multi-residue method for the determination of antibiotics and some of their metabolites in seafood

Abstract: The presence of antibiotics in seafood for human consumption may pose a risk for consumers. A methodology for the analysis of antibiotics in seafood based on QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction, followed by detection and quantification using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was developed. The analytical method was evaluated for the determination of 23 antibiotics (including parent compounds and some metabolites) in fish, mussels and clams. Recoveries ranged b… Show more

“…For example, atenolol showed MS signal enhancement in extracts of one species and suppression in another, using the same salts ( Berlioz-Barbier et al., 2014 ). The addition of chelating ligands such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) can also improve extraction efficiency of some compounds which readily form complexes with matrices containing metals ( Serra-Compte et al., 2017 ; Dasenaki and Thomaidis, 2015 ). Therefore, analytical methods that have been developed using one matrix may not show the same performance for another and methods need to be assessed carefully before application.…”

“…Antibiotics accumulation in marine mussels has been previously reported 14,15 . For instance, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) antibiotic has been found in the marine environment 15 , and accumulated in commercial aquatic organisms, up to 245.91 ng/g in Pangasius from Thailand 16 .…”

“…The quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe (QuEChERS) method introduced to improve extraction efficiency and to elevate method reliability in a great variety of samples, has been significantly developed and successfully applied in the residues analytical field (Garcia & Gotah, 2017;Serra-Compte et al, 2017). To our knowledge, previous researchers always focused on one sample type or a single class of veterinary drugs.…”
