Multi Response Optimization of Fabrication Parameters of Carbon Fiber‐Reinforced Aluminium Laminates (CARAL): By Taguchi Method and Gray Relational Analysis

Abstract: In this article, the fabrication parameters of carbon fiber‐reinforced aluminium laminates (CARAL) were optimized using gray relational analysis. CARAL were fabricated by hand layup technique as per the control factors and levels designed using Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array. The control factors are layer thickness, orientation, and matrix. The CARAL were fabricated with different layer thickness, orientation and matrix. Flexural and Impact tests were carried out using universal testing machine and impact testi… Show more

“…For flexural testing, ASTM Standard 790-10 was used and specimens were cut in the dimension of 68 Â 12.7 Â 3 mm 3 . [25,26] Both the tensile and flexural testing were performed with the gauge lengths of 100 and 50 mm, respectively, using a DTRX 50 kN, Deepak Poly Plast universal testing machine. The impact testing specimen dimension (68 Â 12.7 Â 3 mm 3 ) was fixed by following the instructions of ASTM Standard D 256-10.…”

“…As Taguchi-Grey Relational Analysis is a type of Design of Experiments that is used to find the best parameters for each process level. These techniques decrease the number of experimental tests while saving time [14]. Researchers used these Combinatorial approaches for heat exchanger heat enhancement problems [15], electrical discharge machining [16] and used the combinatorial approach for optimal parameters for laser cladding with Lanthanum powder and Fe313 [17,18].…”

“…More specifically, to try to optimize the presence and find the optimum combination of these four components, namely coir and jute fibers, nanoclay, and eggshell powder, with markedly different yet possibly synergic characteristics, a Taguchi approach is proposed. The idea is more specifically to determine the significance of process parameter interaction effects [20,21]. As regards tribology, the Taguchi method is useful to obtain indications on the respective influence of different control parameters on wear resistance and has been used already on a number of more traditional composites, such as aluminum ones, filled with titanium carbide particles [22].…”
