Multi-Scale Presentation of Spatial Context for Cultural Heritage Applications

Abstract: An approach to the representation and presentation of spatial and geographical context of cultural heritage sites is proposed. The goal is to combine semantic representations of social and historical context with 3D representations of cultural heritage sites acquired through 3D reconstruction and 3D modeling technologies, to support their interpretation and presentation in education and tourism. Several use cases support and demonstrate the application of the proposed approach including immersive craft and con… Show more

“…For large-scale representations, map-oriented presentation modalities at the same scale but relevant to the local environment and its resources 3D geophysical maps are proposed [46]. This is demonstrated through the implementation of two modalities.…”

“…While debating on the triad heritage-education-sustainability, the current research framework on designing an innovative pedagogy for sustainable development in higher education includes studies directed toward developing (1) an integrated design process such as value-based design [19,20] and user-centred design [21] towards enhancing social well-being, (2) supportive strategies for improving the knowledge base of stakeholders [22], and (3) new skills due to the synergy between the humanities and digital world [23] such as GIS [24], 3D approaches [25], and Augmented Reality [26]. These studies provide clear indications of the need for further enhancement of architectural heritage education by examining how innovative Tools can contribute to creating socially-oriented and user-centred Design Approaches in different "re" actions (regeneration, reuse, restoration, redevelop, reconstruction, etc.).…”

“…Through literature review, we can find that there has been more attention given to the large-scale patterns of historical and cultural heritage [10,11] and cultural heritage routes [12], while there has been less discussion on the distribution of historical and cultural heritage in special regional areas such as ethnic regions, high-altitude areas, and cross-basin areas. Although the geographical characteristics of the integrity [13], systematicity [14], regionality [15], and scalability [16] of historical and cultural heritage have been widely recognized, there has been relatively limited research on the complexity [17], temporality [18], and multiplicativity of historical and cultural heritage. Although some studies have discussed the potential threats and interferences faced by current historical and cultural heritage [19], the impact mechanisms of past geographic factors on the current distribution patterns of historical and cultural heritage still need further investigation and verification [20,21].…”
