Multicenter Evaluation of SonoVue for Improved Endocardial Border Delineation

Abstract: SonoVue is superior to Albunex for improving visualization of endocardial borders in patients with suboptimal noncontrast echocardiograms. Optimal increases in LVEBD, LVO, and duration of useful contrast effect were observed at the 2.0 ml dose of SonoVue.

“…Recently, a multicentric trial evaluated the efficacy of Sono Vue (Bracco Diagnostics Inc., Princeton, NJ) and compared it with Albunex and agitated saline. Complete LV opacification was seen in 34%-87% of cases receiving SonoVue compared to 0%-16% of Albunex receiving patients [22]. These studies clearly establish the superiority of second-generation agents and are currently recommended for enhancing the delineation of endocardial borders in patients with sub-optimal images.…”

“…Such contrast agents which are poorly soluble, do not undergo metabolism, and remain totally in the intravascular space, are eliminated during expiration. In the literature the incidence of side effects is low (0.01%), mainly limited to allergic reactions [17, 18]. Non-renal elimination is of great importance in patients with kidney disease, however there is a little experience in this population.…”

“…EICA were initially applied for improving assessment of left ventricular function (left ventricle opacification, endocardial border delineation [18, 19]. Recently this technique was applied for perfusion exploration, particularly after myocardial infarction [20].…”

“…However, in spite of more persisting contrast on the arterial side of the heart with SHU 508 [9], it is not in clinical use to study early reduced blood flow in the myocardium using MCE. Since preformed, lyophilized phospholipid-stabilized gas bubbles on the market have been a success [10], the simplicity of the gas-releasing carbohydrate-based products in the form of a dry, particulate, water-soluble precursor of gas bubbles encouraging further research. In the present research, our first aim was to investigate if lifetime of the populations of gas bubbles released could be prolonged, by investigating a broad range of amphiphilic compounds.…”
