Multicenter survey on implantable collamer lens dislocation

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, patient background, and postoperative prognosis of implantable collamer lens (ICL) dislocation. We retrospectively reviewed all cases of ICL dislocation at four major refractive surgery centers in Japan until December 2019. The incidence, patient background, cause of dislocation, complications of repositioning surgery, and postoperative visual function were investigated. Seven ICL dislocations [0.072% of total ICL-implanted eyes (9775 eyes)] occurred at an average… Show more

“…However, in our region, these ICLs have been used for quite some time to treat high refractive error and astigmatism. Although rare, postoperative complications have been reported, including cataract formation, pigment dispersion, intraocular inflammation, toxic anterior segment syndrome, traumatic subluxation, and toric ICL rotation [ 10 ]. Most of the reported cases of lenticular coloboma were bilateral and had cataract changes, making cataract removal and IOL implantation the clear management option.…”

“…Implantable collamer lenses (ICLs), as a biocompatible material of collagen and polymer, can treat a wide range of ametropias; for high myopia, they were shown to be more effective than laser in situ keratomileusis [ 3 ]. However, complications related to a nonideal postoperative ICL vault, caused by improper ICL size choices, such as glaucoma, cataract, and even crystalline lens dislocation, have been reported [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
