Multicenter validation of the Quality of Trauma Care Patient-Reported Experience Measure (QTAC-PREM)

Abstract: This study demonstrates that the QTAC-PREM is feasible to implement at trauma centers and provides evidence of validity and reliability. The tool may be useful to incorporate patient perspectives into trauma care quality measurement and improvement.

“…Although identified priorities were similar, differing levels of detail were provided by the stakeholder groups and priorities changed over time. While there has been some development of instruments to measure quality of care after injury 15 , we could find only one example of exploration of issues or outcomes identified as important by patients 16 and this was specific to people with ankle fractures. Further exploration of recovery priorities using quantitative techniques is required to determine relevance to a broad cross-section of trauma patients and to develop an appropriate set of outcome measures that patients consider to be important.…”

“…The score for each Factor was calculated by taking the mean of the scores of the items under it. The total score for the PREM-CCH was calculated by taking the mean of the scores of all included items [30].…”

“…Of the 4,951 participating outpatients, 4,835 had no missing data in general characteristics and 3,986 were 18 years old and above. Among the 40 items on outpatient experience, two items were excluded due to the high rates of "not applicable" responses (≧30%) [30]. As in the present study, exploratory factor analysis was one principal method, which cannot be performed if there are missing data, we excluded cases with responses "cannot tell" (n=350) and "not applicable" (n=1,343) for patient experience items.…”

“…Although many validated surveys have been suggested to measure patient experiences, including the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS)16 or the Quality of Trauma Care Patient-Reported Experience Measure,17 these are focused on processes of care and ignore feelings towards delivery of care. Furthermore, these surveys are long and have multiple components, potentially reducing response rates.…”
