Multicriteria Decision Aid in Supporting Decisions Related to Groundwater Protection

Abstract: In the recent decades, there have been frequent conflicts between groundwater resources and environmentally hazardous activities. An example is the construction of the new highway through the important glaciofluvial esker aquifer Nybroåsen, which passes the protection zone of the water supply for the Kalmar municipality, in the southeastern part of Sweden. The decision to build the new road through this important aquifer has been strongly questioned by the municipality and the public because the value of the w… Show more

“…Results of systematic monitoring in Poland in various ranges should become the base for optimal systems of operational monitoring, adjusted to issues linked with potential impact of shale gas drilling. So far, Polish experience combined with study methods arising from groundwater quality control in areas of shale gas deposits in the U.S., as well as with European guidelines on water protection resulting from obligatory Directives, are the basis for present assumptions for the optimal organization of a monitoring network in regions of shale gas production (Eliasson at. al., 2003;Scott et al, 2011).…”

“…Based on mentioned cases, it is not an easy task to evaluate land degradation, and different methods should be investigated (Lal et al, 1997). The information produced by estimating the vulnerability to desertification and erosion (Eswaran and Reich, 1998) gives a different picture than those based on estimating the present (actual) state of land degradation (Oldeman, 1992). For example, the data based on risk assessments show that most regions of the world affected by different severity classes of water and wind erosion are 5-6 times higher than those estimates done on the basis of assessment of present status.…”

“…In the last decades over 20 per cent of the country is exposed to desertification. It has detrimental impacts on agricultural productivity and on ecological function (Zehtabian, Jafari 2002;Eliasson et al 2003;Amiraslani, Dragovich 2009;Pan and Li 2013).…”
