Application of XGBoost for Fast Identification of Typical Industrial Organic Waste Samples with Near-Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging

Waste material identification is an essential part of waste recycling and treatment. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) enables fast, accurate, nondestructive, and non-invasive identification of waste materials. In this study, HSI-based classification of typical industrial organic waste that cannot be sorted via traditional methods has been explored, namely, leather, paper, plastic, rubber, textile, and wood. The extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) algorithm, a supervised machine learning algorithm that has never been investigated for waste identification-related fields, was adopted. The results show that XGBoost obtained a higher pixelwise weighted average F1-score of 82.72% and a faster prediction time of 270 ms for the tested images compared with the commonly used partial least squares-discriminant analysis (77.83% and 444 ms). XGBoost was more effective and efficient in aiding HSI identification and classification of industrial organic waste. The technique can be a significant advancement in the development of an online sorting or identification platform, affording significant labor cost reduction, time savings, and the provision of a stable, accurate, and rapid method for waste intelligent identification.

This study investigates how the perceptions of graduate students within a doctoral program in a midsized higher education institution in Southwest Florida evolved over a semester regarding multicultural education and impacted their careers and professional lives. A qualitative case study method was utilized with multiple data sources collected, including interviews, students’ written papers, students’ presentations, as well as online discussions and assignments that aimed to prepare educational leaders within culturally diverse topics while challenging and impacting their perceptions about diversity, race, cultural, and multicultural education experiences. The findings were that post-doctoral coursework in the area of multicultural education produced three significant themes: (1) false understanding of what multicultural education encompassed, (2) increased awareness of self-biases, lack of resources and training, and (3) finally, a feeling of helplessness where participants want to see transformation but are unable to affect change.

Considering increasing diversity and the need for culturally responsive education, this study examines the integration of technology within multicultural curricula in Chinese high schools. This study focuses on the interplay between task characteristics and technological capabilities and their impact on student performance. Grounded in the TaskTechnology Fit theory, the analysis employs structural equation modelling (SEM) to assess the relationships among these variables. This study aims to identify how aligning educational tasks with technological resources can enhance student outcomes in multicultural learning environments. The research design involved collecting data from a purposive sample of teachers and students in Beijing, and the analysis revealed significant relationships among task characteristics (TaC), technology characteristics (TeC), tasktechnology fit (TTF), and student performance (SP). The findings highlight that optimal alignment between educational tasks and technological tools is crucial for enhancing academic performance and fostering deeper engagement with the multicultural aspects of the curriculum. These results emphasise the critical need for strategic selection and integration of technology in educational settings. This study underscores the importance of developing strategies that consider both the pedagogical aspects of the curriculum and the technological tools used for its delivery. This research provides empirical insights into the effective use of technology in multicultural education and offers valuable guidance for educators and policymakers. Furthermore, it plays a role in attaining sustainable development goal 4 and 10. The findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on educational technology and multicultural education, with practical implications for enhancing teaching and learning in diverse educational contexts.
