Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness: Psychometric Properties of the Portuguese Version

Abstract: Interoceptive awareness involves several mind-body dimensions and can be evaluated by self-report with the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA), which has been translated and validated in several countries and is being used in research and clinical contexts. This study systematically translated the MAIA with six additional items using a focus group and evaluated its psychometric properties in a respondent sample of 204 Portuguese university students (52% females; M ¼ 21.3, SD ¼ 3.9 yea… Show more

“…Nevertheless, while our EFA-derived model is currently unique in terms of the relatively high number of items and factors that have been excluded, it is worth noting that several other authors have also failed to replicate the parent structure [14,15,17,18,71]. Furthermore, it is arguable that many of the extant 8-factor models have retained factors or items erroneously.…”

“…For example, as previously highlighted, the Not-Distracting and Not-Worrying subscales have either been altered or excluded from the majority of the available validation studies [10-18, 26, 71]. Similarly, the Body Listening and Self-Regulation subscales have been either discarded or altered in many cases [7,10,13,14,17,18].…”

“…First, there was no formal test for convergent validity using questionnaires that presumably assess either interoceptive attention or accuracy, such as the recently developed Interoceptive Attention Scale (Gabriele et al, 2020) or the Interoceptive Confusion Questionnaire (Brewer et al, 2016), as neither of these is available in Portuguese. There is actually an interoception-related questionnaire translated for Portuguese (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness; (Machorrinho et al, 2019) but it does not provide a clear measure of either interoceptive attention and accuracy. Thus, it was decided to establish convergent and divergent validity by examining the association between both scales and by exploring the theoretically sound differential association between both scales and the well-established alexithymia scale, which has been properly validated for European Portuguese.…”

“…Subscales are averaged, and a higher total score represents a better outcome (α = 0.66 to 0.87). The MAIA Portuguese version presents good psychometric properties (α = 0.61 to 0.87) ( 64 ).…”
