“…Nevertheless, food additives are often unaccounted for when estimating phosphorus intake in CKD patients (Uribarri 2007). A multidisciplinary approach among nurses, dieticians and clinicians is recommended (Casey et al 2006). It may help not only to achieve clinical goals through dietary assessment but also through education, behaviour control and by increasing the patient's personal motivation.…”

“…To achieve targets for mineral metabolism in CKD stage 5 patients on dialysis, a locally developed protocol which included an algorithm for phosphate binder prescription and the prescribing of alfacalcidol was introduced. Audit of the impact of the protocol demonstrated an improvement in achieving the targets after 12 months (Casey et al 2006). Treatment algorithms for ESA dosing using a computer‐based decision support system has also proven successful in achieving haemoglobin values (Will et al 2007).…”

“…The majority of the care that is required to manage complications of CKD takes place outside of the renal unit and is in the hands of the patient. Therefore it is important for nurses to work in partnership with patients and their families to encourage adherence to prescribed treatment. The multidisciplinary team: The inclusion of various members of the multidisciplinary team was credited with ensuring the success of protocol use (Casey et al 2006). Timely referral to multidisciplinary team members who can offer necessary support in helping patients manage their CKD holistically is required.…”
