Multidisciplinary Approach in the Treatment of a Patient with Cleft Lip and Palate: A Case Report

Abstract: Treatment of the patient with cleft lip and palate represents a real problem from both functional and esthetic points of view. Today a functional result is not enough. An esthetic result is both necessary and possible to improve the quality of life. The direct placement of an implant in the grafted alveolar cleft is not the ideal choice. Using a rational, multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to obtain esthetic results in these patients. In our case study, a 17-year-old patient previously treated for a un… Show more

“…The quality of care in cleft lip and palate must be viewed in terms of the final outcome of the total treatment plan rather than by considering the effect of any single treatment. Successful long-term outcomes depend on individualized, long-term treatment by educating parents and motivating them with the help of multidisciplinary team of experts in the field, from before birth through infancy, childhood, and adolescence to ensure comprehensive care (Abarca et al, 2004).…”

“…This condition frequently accompanies such disorders as cleft palate, congenital paralysis of the soft palate, and cerebrovascular disease. Cleft lip and palate is the most frequent congenital craniofacial deformity, with a mean prevalence of between 1:500 and 1:700 in Europe (Sinko et al, 2005) and 1:1000 in the world (Abarca et al, 2004). Treatment of velopharyngeal incompetence includes both surgical and prosthetic procedures (Ueda et al, 2002).…”
