Multidisciplinary Conferences for Radiology Teaching: Why Medical Students Should See the Significance of Imaging and Lifelong Learning

Abstract: Radiology interfaces with all medical disciplines. Whether medical students pursue a career in radiology or any other medical discipline, as future physicians they will always come across imaging at multidisciplinary conferences (MCs). Students at all departments are confronted with imaging in their studies. It is therefore important they recognize the role of radiology in patient care. With imaging being imperative for patient management, radiology is indispensable at MCs. Radiologists cooperate with all clin… Show more

“…With busy work schedules, radiologists, and radiographers expect students to learn their way around during SR. If teaching time is limited due to disruptions, complexity, and challenging encounters in patient care, and with specialists rotating across departments, valuable learning experience in the reading room is limited for students (Naeger et al, 2013;Petsch et al, 2020;Rizvi & Borges, 2020;Clements et al, 2022). This is where the RRM-pocket card can help to keep track of performed tasks, such as performing a pre-ultrasound scan of the kidney before drainage of a kidney abscess, pre-measuring findings in ultrasound scans, e. g. of kidney cysts, ovarian cysts in the US department; or in mammograms in the MG department, e. g. of breast cysts (benign), breast tumors (malignant); or presenting patient cases on benign and malignant findings after attending related MTB (see Appendix B).…”

“…Yet, with workload increasing in medical care, teaching practice for radiologists and radiographers during clerkships takes place alongside busy workflow in everyday clinical routine. While delivering clinical care, and complex patient management, radiologists need to prepare for daily MC, MTB, and contribute to urgent case reporting (Munk, 2016;Petsch et al, 2020). Radiologists are increasingly involved in cancer diagnoses and therapies, and need to be involved in regular MTB attendance, demanding additional preparation time for case reviews to deliver upmost patient care, but which reduces student teaching involvement (Berardi et al, 2020;Neri et al, 2021).…”

“…Different SR are an excellent chance to explore manifold medical questions. Consequently, imaging is an integral component of MC and MTB settings for making diagnoses, detecting disease stages, and proceeding with patient therapies and treatments (Choi & Filice, 2020;Petsch et al, 2020). Students need to learn about different indications and contraindications for case reading and reporting in imaging, and about clinical diagnoses and differential diagnoses among other aspects (Petsch et al, 2021).…”
