Multidisciplinary Team Training in a Simulation Setting for Acute Obstetric Emergencies

Abstract: Introduction of multidisciplinary teamwork training with integrated acute obstetric training interventions in a simulation setting is potentially effective in the prevention of errors, thus improving patient safety in acute obstetric emergencies. Studies on its effectiveness and cost-effectiveness are needed before team training can be implemented on broad scale.

“…Several elements differentiate the CSP training process used in the present study: (1) all maternity staff from a facility were invited to participate; (2) the participants worked in teams of doctors and midwives; (3) they reacted to realistic scenarios; (4) mannequins and basic supplies were used to simulate the hospital environment; and (5) structured supportive follow-up visits were made to each hospital to answer questions and practice skills. Team training using simulation exercises can lead to improved emergency obstetric skills [15,20,21,25]. Interactive training in teams allows participants to learn from each other and improves communication and team performance [15,21].…”

“…Instead, CME should be competency-based [3], use practice-based small group work and interdisciplinary teamwork, and involve multiple exposures to improve competence and performance [15][16][17][18][19]. However, there is little evidence from such CME programs in low-and middle-income countries [15,18,20,21].…”
