Multidrug-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococci in food animals

Abstract: Aims To study the antimicrobial resistance of coagulase‐negative staphylococci (CoNS) in animals. Methods and Results In the present study, a total of 87 CoNS recovered from food animals were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, resistance gene identification and conjugation. Of the seven species studied, Staphylococcus lentus, Staphylococcus sciuri, Staphylococcus xylosus and Staphylococcus haemolyticus accounted for over 96% of the isolates. In addition to β‐lactam resistance (100%), high p… Show more

“…In other published studies, MRSE has been infrequently or not detected in farmed pigs (Zhang et al, 2009;Bhargava and Zhang, 2012). Similarly, in poultry (Zhang et al, 2009;Bhargava and Zhang, 2012) and cattle relatively few MRSE isolates have been identified in healthy populations.…”

Conversely, S. epidermidis is one of the main CoNS causing ruminant intramammary infections (Vanderhaeghen et al, 2014), with similar methicillin-resistance rates as reported in the current study (Sampimon et al, 2011;Frey et al, 2013).…”

“…Most of the previous studies on resistance have concentrated on staphylococci isolated from clinical samples (26,31). Recently, some researchers have suggest ed that food could be an appropriate environment for resistant and multiresistant strains and that the food chain could play a key role in the transmission of resistance between the environment and humans (3,12,20,22). This study gives a better understanding of the multiple antimicrobial resistance profiles observed in staphylococcal isolates from RTE food in Poland.…”

“…As problems with breakpoints for NAS have been noted before (Nemeghaire et al, 2014b(Nemeghaire et al, , 2014c, it may be necessary to evaluate the breakpoints at staphylococcal species level. Most genes have already been described among NAS of animal origin (Bhargava and Zhang, 2012;Chah et al, 2014;Frey et al, 2013;Kern and Perreten, 2013;Nemeghaire et al, 2014bNemeghaire et al, , 2014cWeiß et al, 2014;Wendlandt et al, 2013). The presence of other genes or combination of genes was particularly relevant in certain species.…”
