Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in côte d'ivoire from 1995 to 2016: Results of national surveys

Abstract: SettingTuberculosis (TB) drug resistance survey was conducted in 2016–2017 to estimate the burden of drug-resistant TB in Côte d'Ivoire.DesignA cross-sectional cluster-based survey was conducted. All eligible smear positive patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to collect clinical and sociodemographic information and tested by the Xpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis/rifampicin (MTB/RIF) assay. If resistant to rifampicin, solid and liquid cultures were performed. Phenotypic drug susceptibility… Show more

“…The estimated figures are 3.5 and 16% MDR/RR-TB, respectively, among new and retreatment cases in the country (5). This correlates with a 10-year national survey which found 4.5 and 22% RR-TB among new and previously treated TB cases in the country (35). A cohort of 81 MDR-TB patients monitored in a pneumology unit, faced debilitating side effects leading to dropouts (39.2%), deaths (15.2%), diverse attacks (30.4%), and only 5% cured (38).…”

“…Data on DR-TB in WA are scanty which reflect diagnostic limitation but not actual epidemiologic situation (31). Drugresistant TB including but not limited to MDR and XDR is an emerging public health problem in WA with several countries reporting different prevalence over the years (7,(32)(33)(34)(35). A collaborative DR-TB surveillance among nine WA countries by the West African Network for Tuberculosis, AIDS and Malaria (WANETAM) showed that the WHO estimates are almost always below the actual incidence (Figure 1) (33).…”

“…In nearby Burkina Faso, levels of 3.4% in new cases similar to what we detected, but very high levels in previously treated patients (50.5%) have been reported [ 19 ]. Similarly, in Côte d’Ivoire, the proportion of patients with rifampicin resistance was estimated to be 4.6% (95% CI: 2.4–6.7) and 22% (95% CI: 13.7–30.3), respectively, for new and previously treated patients [ 20 ]. In Tanzania, the prevalence of any resistance among new and previously treated patients was 8.3% and 20%, respectively [ 21 ].…”

“…The rate of 14.5% found among PTPs in this study is similar to what was found in Botswana [1] (13%). Higher levels were reported in the nearby countries of Democratic Republic of the Congo (17%) [1], Ivory Coast (22%) [15], and in Ghana (27.7%) [16]. The prevalence of RR-TB was highest among patients failing a category I regimen and patients with TB relapse.…”
