Multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced multilayered metastructure with broadband microwave absorption and effective mechanical resistance

Abstract: Metastructure is an innovative structure form to improve broadband microwave absorption. However, without reliable mechanical properties, it is difficult to apply metastructure absorbers in realistic application scenarios. Herein, a multifunctional carbon fiber reinforced multilayered metastructure (CFRMM) is proposed and fabricated through the principles of multiscale design, gradient structure design, and metastructure design. The multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/carbonyl iron (CI)/epoxy resin(EP) nano loss… Show more

“…However, the widespread use of electromagnetic waves is causing serious radiation and interference problems in the life of humans. [1][2][3][4] EMW interfere with the normal use of electromagnetic equipment, electromagnetic radiation harms health for life and ecology, and electromagnetic leakage threatens information security. [5,6] For solving electromagnetic pollution, high-performance wave-absorbing materials are receiving increasing attention, recently.…”

“…The CI particles had average diameters of 1-5 μm and measured real permeability of 3.5 at 1 GHz. The polylactic acid (PLA, 4032D) was supplied by Nature Works Co. Ltd. with processing temperature of 170-230 C, glass transition temperature of 50-65 C and densigy of 1.24 g/cm 3 . The diameter of the PLA particles is around 4 mm.…”

“…Broadband microwave absorption as a hot research topic plays important roles on electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic radiation protection and radar detection disguise, 1,2 which can effectively absorb incident electromagnetic waves and significantly reduce the intensity of target echo. 3,4 Compared with traditional microwave absorbing materials, [5][6][7][8] electromagnetic metamaterials/ metastructures are designed with special multi-scale structures to obtain electromagnetic properties that traditional materials do not have, such as left-handed properties, backward wave properties and negative refraction properties. 9,10 For example, as the frequency selective surface itself can only reflect electromagnetic waves and cannot absorb them, the frequency selective surface with microwave absorbing properties is made by combining the frequency selective surface with the lossy material, which can better realize the characteristics of polarization insensitivity, wide incidence angle, multi frequency band, and broadband.…”

“…The primary component typically performs a structural, load-bearing function with at least one additional component that performs a non-structural function such as thermal insulation, energy harvesting/storage, lightning strike protection or electromagnetic shielding. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are commonly used for structural components in aerospace applications due to their attractive mechanical properties and low weight. 8 In this work, the mechanical performance of multifunctional unidirectional CFRP laminates with additional Cu wire mesh layers was investigated.…”
