Multifunctional carbon foam with hollow microspheres and a concave–convex microstructure for adjustable electromagnetic wave absorption and wearable applications

Abstract: The unique C-rGO/Fe3O4 carbon foam with hollow microsphere and concave–convex microstructure had excellent EMW absorption performance with smart function-tunable feature, also showing potential application for monitoring humans’ physiological signal.

“…Thanks to the 3D structure and good impedance matching of N-Ni-Co x S y /Ni x S y @C, an RL min of −48.3 dB and an EAB of 3.95 GHz could be achieved at a thickness of only 1.5 mm. Liu's group [115] fabricated carbonated rGO/Fe 3 O 4 (C-rGO/Fe 3 O 4 ) carbon foams with hollow microspheres through the Pickering emulsion gel technology and annealing process. Cellulose nanofibrils and rGO were selected as carbon sources.…”

“…Fe‐based materials have been regarded as the promising candidates for MA owing to their high conductivity and strong magnetic loss ability. [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 ] More importantly, Fe‐based materials exhibit multiple phases (Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , Fe, etc. ), [ 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ] and most phase components display remarkable magnetism.…”

“…Bulk solid materials with macrostructures, such as foams 12,13 and aerogels, 14,15 which can be applied as a free-standing EMW absorbing and EMI shielding materials, are seen as a potential strategy for the development of new-type lightweight absorbers with versatility by addressing the poor durability of composites without subsequent steps and improving the poor cohesion of conventional composites. 16 So far, graphene-based aerogel as a representative of lightweight multifunctional EMW absorbing and EMI shielding materials with three-dimensional (3D) porous structure has achieved high intensity broadband absorption, which has been applied in complex environments because of its excellent high hydrophobicity, heat insulation, anti-frosting, and mechanical properties.…”
