Multifunctional CuO nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activity

Abstract: Rhizome extract of Bergenia ciliata was used as a bio-functional reducing material for the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs). CuO NPs were characterized using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). XRD analysis revealed the monoclinic phase of synthesized CuO NPs with an average particle size of 20 nm. Spherical shaped nanos… Show more

“…This spectrum showed absorption peaks at 250 nm and 298 nm, attributed to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorbance of metal oxide nanoparticles and energy band contributions respectively, confirming the formation of CuO NPs. 43,44 This SPR band depended on size, shape, and nature of the particles. 45 The change of colour from light green to dark also verified the surface plasmon-induced absorption.…”

“…Dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis was also performed to obtain the particle-size distribution. 51 In this DLS technique, the intensity of light scattered by the CuO particles dispersed in a solution was recorded at a very high temporal resolution, and using this data, the average particle diameter was calculated, as shown in Fig. S4 (ESI †) with a particle size (diameter) around 110.9 nm.…”

“…The SEM micrograph of TiO2 shows that the nanoparticles are monodisperse and have a spherical geometry [36]. The SEM analysis of CuO presented in Figure 3b shows some agglomeration of particles due to a large surface area [37]. The homogeneous distribution of CuO over TiO2 was observed in the SEM image of the nanocomposite, as illustrated in Figure 3c.…”
