Multifunctional nanosponges for the treatment of various diseases: A review

Abstract: Recent advances in nanotechnology demonstrate the increased attention that is now being turned to the supramolecular assembly of simple components for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. This review contains detail about materials used in synthesis of nanosponges, different methods of preparation, characterization and applications. Targeted drug delivery to specific sites is the significant problem which is being faced by the medical researchers. The new developed colloidal system called nanosponge has potent… Show more

“…Nanosponges (NSs) are porous nanocarriers with a particle size ≤1000 nm which is favorable for increasing the solubility, dissolution rate and sustained drug release action for temporal and targeted purposes [ 8 ]. The porous nature of the NSs could accommodate more drugs and diffusion of the solvent will be easy [ 9 ]. NS carriers are implicated in numerous disease conditions and early trials considered this nanotechnology five-folds more effective in comparison to conventional drug delivery systems, especially in malignant cancer treatment [ 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…NSs are the material of choice over β-CDs due to their higher stability, biocompatibility, encapsulation efficiencies, and control over their particle size and solubility [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Moreover, NSs increase the permeability of dermal formulations, control the drug release rate, and lessen drug degradation [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…Nanosponges are highly porous nanoparticles composed of hyper-cross-linked polymers and can entrap active molecules. The porous architecture of the nanosponges provides superior drug absorption/complexation properties [32,33]. These tiny structures have the capability of encapsulation of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs and can enhance the solubility of poor water-soluble molecules [34][35][36].…”
