Multifunctional nonlinear magnonic devices for microwave signal processing

Abstract: A multifunctional microwave spin-wave device utilizing a ferrite-film magnonic crystal is reported. A principal of operation of the device is based on a nonlinear frequency shift and a nonlinear damping of the carrier spin waves propagating in the magnonic crystal. The device performs several functions of microwave signal processing, namely, enhancement of signal-to-noise ratio, limiting or suppression of high-power signals, and power-dependent phase shift.

“…For magnon spintronic applications, magnonic crystals constitute one of the key elements since they open up access to novel multi-functional magnonic devices [9]. These devices can be used as spin-wave conduits and filters (we do not provide any citations here since, in fact, any magnonic crystal can serve as a conduit or a filter), sensors [99][100][101], delay lines and phase shifters [102,103], components of auto-oscillators [49,51,102,103], frequency and time inverters [104,105], data-buffering elements [105,106], power limiters [107], nonlinear enhancers in a magnon transistor [108], and components of logic gates [109,110]. The concept of magnon spintronics.…”

“…The generation of sidebands, i.e., the self modulation spin wave instability, was not observed in the measured spectrum at low powers of the input signal delivered to the sam ple. However, the entire transmission curve was shifted toward lower frequencies with an increase in the input power [25]. In this case, the experimentally measured nonlinear coefficient of the frequency shift appeared to be N = -0.485 MHz/mW.…”

“…One-and two-dimensional structures can be realized by varying the geometry of an otherwise uniform waveguide; for example its width can be modulated (Fig. 7a) [60,146], or a spatial periodicity in its thickness can be introduced [9,145,147,148]. Alternatively, alternating segments of different magnetic materials [149,150] or coupled arrays of magnetic elements, can be assembled [51,[151][152][153][154][155] (Fig.…”
