Multilayer single-component thin films and microcapsules via covalent bonded layer-by-layer self-assembly

Abstract: Fabrication of single-component multilayer thin films still remains a challenging task via the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach. In this communication, we report the self-assembly of single-component multilayer thin films on flat and colloidal substrates through glutaraldehyde mediated covalent bonding.

“…Our approach of making PMF composed of one polyelectrolyte may provide certain competitive advantages over conventional PMF. It is because the presence of two types of polyelectrolytes in conventional PMF leads to several potential shortcomings including interlayer diffusion, film irregularity, and structural instability 43–45. The reaction between PEI and TA was completed within 15 min since the absorbance of both TA and FITC‐PEI peaks were independent of the reaction time beyond 15 min.…”

“…At the beginning, only electrostatic interactions were utilized for LbL assembly. Subsequently, other interactions such as covalent bond,38–44 hydrogen bonding,45–51 charge transfer,52, 53 hydrophobic,54–56 host–gest,57–60 and coordination bond61–67 interactions have been investigated to facilitate polymer association for ultrathin film deposition. The most important concept for LbL assembly is how to use the interactions between the polymeric materials.…”

“…The assembly process was followed by UV–vis spectroscopy. As shown in Figure 1, the absorption spectra of the films present two shoulders at ∼225 and 265 nm, which can be assigned to the absorption of glutaraldehyde and chitosan, respectively, according to Manna et al36 A linear relationship between the film absorption and layer number was found, indicating that chitosan was assembled in a uniform and reproducible manner.…”

“…We38 previously synthesized single‐component chitosan LBL film by selective crosslinking chitosan in a chitosan/PAA (PAA: polyacrylic acid) film with glutaraldehyde, followed by the removal of PAA under alkali conditions. Recently Manna et al36 developed a more straightforward way, in which single‐component chitosan LBL films were synthesized by glutaraldehyde‐mediated assembly.…”
