Multilevel modelling of aircraft noise on performance tests in schools around Heathrow Airport London

Abstract: Study objective: To examine the effects of chronic exposure to aircraft noise on children's school performance taking into account social class and school characteristics. Design: This is a cross sectional study using the National Standardised Scores (SATs) in mathematics, science, and English (11 000 scores from children aged 11 years). The analyses used multilevel modelling to determine the effects of chronic aircraft noise exposure on childrens' school performance adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic an… Show more

“…A recent analysis of airport noise and children's health and cognitive performance around Heathrow Airport documents linkages between income and actual, objective indices of noise exposure. As shown in Table 2, elementary schools with higher levels of aircraft noise exposure have greater percentages of children eligible for free lunches (58). Leq is an index of average intensity of sound exposure, measured in decibels.…”

“…The mean reading age of children in the classrooms on the noisy side of the school was 3 to 4 months behind the children in the low noise-exposed classrooms. A more recent study of national standardised test scores (SATs) carried out around the Heathrow Airport [45], examined test scores for 11,000 11-year-old children in relation to aircraft noise exposure contours for their school. The results showed that there was an exposure-effect relationship between noise exposure and performance on reading and math tests, but that this was influenced by socioeconomic factors.…”
