Multilocular Cystic Nephroma: A Systematic Literature Review of the Radiologic and Clinical Findings

Abstract: Cross-sectional imaging evaluation is important for suggesting the diagnosis of MLCN but has several limitations. The number of radical nephrectomies reported for MLCN encourages discussion concerning the utility of percutaneous presurgical biopsy and frozen-section intraoperative biopsy as a more conservative diagnostic approach.

“…Sometimes the Wilms tumour may presents as a multilocular cystic mass, but the lack of haemorrhage, necrosis, or a nodular structure within the cystic mass rules out this possibility in our case [9]. Exceptional, segmental multicystic dysplastic kidney with cysts isolated to a portion of the kidney may have a similar appearance to cystic nephroma, but in this particular case the cysts are not separated by renal parenchyma [5].…”

“…It is a benign tumour, usually encountered in the first years of childhood, affecting mostly males and less common during adult life, when is frequently described in women [5]. Nowadays, cystic nephroma is described together with cystic partially differentiated nephroblastoma (CPDN) as a multilocular cystic renal tumour.…”

“…In a review article by Granja et al (10), the most common initial findings were according to the frequency order have been reported as a palpable mass (35.2%), incidental imaging Figure 2. Macroscopic view of the mass in the operating room after the excision finding (23.2%), abdominal pain (18.7%), hematuria (7.1%), non-specific symptoms (5.2%), and a palpable mass with hypertension (3.9%).…”

“…In time, CT became the primary imaging technique for evaluation of MCN but unfortunately can not be used to certainly differantiate other cystic renal masses like renal hydatic cyst and cystic renal cell carcinoma (10) . However, number of cases can encourage the performing percutaneous biopsy before surgery or frozen-biopsy intraoperatively and has the potential to avoid a significant number of major surgical procedures (11) .…”

“…Nephron-sparing surgery is the suggested surgical treatment modality for a small renal mass. Even though surgery remains the standard of care for small renal tumors, cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation have emerged as minimally invasive treatment alternatives (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)13) . In our case, due to tumor size, similarity to cystic renal cell carcinoma and renal hydatid cyst, we decided to perform open total nephrectomy.…”
