Multimodal Categorical and Dimensional Approaches to Understanding Threat Conditioning and Its Extinction in Individuals With Anxiety Disorders

Abstract: to guide neuropsychiatry toward precision medicine. Its inception was partly in response to the overlap of clinical manifestations between different DSM-IV diagnoses within a category. For example, anxiety disorders comprise a DSM-IV category that includes diagnoses that differ from each other but are all characterized by dysregulated fear levels. Whether DSM-IV-based and Research Domain Criteria-based analytic approaches provide distinct or similar information with regard to the fear circuitry of individuals … Show more

“…Thus, SCR to the CS reflected changes in skin conductance beyond any change in skin conductance level produced by the baseline image. SCR data were square root transformed ( Milad et al, 2007 , 2008 , 2009 ; Marin et al, 2016 , 2017 , 2020b ). Data were screened for outlier values (+/− 3.29 standard deviations from the mean).…”

“…Future studies should monitor the time each patient spends in the waiting room, the number of times patients wash their hands, and touch surfaces, as these may be associated with a greater likelihood of infection. Furthermore, thoughts associated with anxiety could be evaluated qualitatively, and other behaviours or physiological responses associated with anxiety, such as heart rate or skin conductance, could be evaluated quantitatively [ 35 ].…”

“…This crosssubtype classification results support the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) approach 64 . We have recently published a study showing that there are advantages to use the RDoC approach in learning about the psychopathology of anxiety disorders 32 . The results from this study require further validation across a larger sample of patients with PTSD and anxiety disorders.…”

“…Among the anxiety group, there were 24 patients diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), 17 panic disorder (PD) patients, 31 social anxiety disorder (SAD) patients, and 20 specific phobia (SP) patients. Data from this sample have been published elsewhere focusing on the neural mechanisms of fear conditioning and extinction within PTSD and anxiety disorders 8,12,32 . Specific and detailed criteria pertaining to each patient population has been detailed in these previous publications.…”
