“…This would likely lead to a failure in monitoring the semantic conflict between gestures and speech, as reflected by decreased RT only in semantically incongruent trials. In the second stage, although speech started at the point when gestures became semantically clear, we cannot dismiss that perturbing the pMTG activity would interfere with the reanalysis of semantic information for the observed iconic gesture to make it compatible with the accompanying speech context (Fritz et al, 2021). Since semantically incongruent pairs triggered an increased need for strategic recovery, inhibition of the pMTG in the second stage would dampen such a process, thus reducing the RT cost in the semantically incongruent condition.…”

“…Last but not least, together with other recent studies (Fritz et al, 2021;Holle & Gunter, 2007;Zhang et al, 2021), the present study builds on previous work by moving beyond paradigms at the single word or sentence level by using prose passages consisting of two consecutive sentence stimuli. This is still far removed from naturalistic language use of course (see above), but it allows us to move one step further towards capturing some of the core features of discourse, such as the semantic constraint preceding discourse can exert and its effect on word predictability.…”

“…This model showed no evidence for an interaction between Discourse and Gesture (see Table 1, for an overview of the results). Bin analyses (Fritz et al, 2021) Table 2 lists the effects of the eight linear mixed-effects models for activity elicited over the Cz-Pz electrode complex-one for each 100-ms bin. During the first bin from 200 to 300 ms, we observed no statistical differences between the four conditions.…”
