Multiphase Equilibria for Mixtures Containing Acetic Acid, Water, Propylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether, and Propylene Glycol Methyl Ether Acetate

Abstract: A static-type apparatus equipped with a visual cell was utilized in the present study to measure isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) and vapor-liquid-liquid equilibrium (VLLE) data over a temperature range of 323.24 to 393.15 K. The VLE data were determined experimentally for binary mixtures of propylene glycol monomethyl ether (PGME) + propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PGMEA) and acetic acid + PGME. A minimum pressure azeotrope exhibits on each isotherm of acetic acid + PGME. The VLLE data were als… Show more

“…In the MPA reaction and separation system, there existed three kinds of binary azeotropes, namely MP–H 2 O, MP–HAC and MPA–H 2 O mixtures, which increased the difficulties of the reactive distillation operation. Therefore a combination of extractive and reactive distillation was developed to separate the generated H 2 O from the system.…”

“…Moreover, the reactive distillation method could simultaneously achieve reaction and separation goals, which also reduced the investment and operating costs. [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25] In the MPA reaction and separation system, there existed three kinds of binary azeotropes, namely MP-H 2 O, 26 MP-HAC 27 and MPA-H 2 O 4 mixtures, which increased the difficulties of the reactive distillation operation. Therefore a combination of extractive and reactive distillation was developed to separate the generated H 2 O from the system.…”

“…As an important organic solvent in industry, propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (PMA) is extensively applied to multiple fields, such as coatings, inks, cleaning agents, printing, textile dyes, and leather tanning agents. The excellent solubility in both polar and nonpolar substances is attributed to the unique structure with carbonyl and ether bonds simultaneously . Moreover, owing to the advantage of low toxicity, more poisonous glycol ether and ester solvents are gradually replaced by PMA.…”
