Multiphoton laser direct writing of two-dimensional silver structures

Abstract: We report a novel and efficient method for the laser direct writing of two-dimensional silver structures. Multiphoton absorption of a small fraction of the output of a Ti:sapphire oscillator is sufficient to photoreduce silver nitrate in a thin film of polyvinylpyrrolidone that has been spin-coated on a substrate. The polymer can then be washed away, leaving a pattern consisting of highly interconnected silver nanoparticles. We report the characterization of the silver patterns using scanning electron and atom… Show more

“…However, it is now known that silver and gold can be deposited in metallic form by simple irradiation with light [88][89][90][91]. Silver metals can also be deposited using light by a multiphoton process [92], which suggests the creation of three-dimensional structure laser scanning optics.…”

“…The host materials are often transparent dielectrics, which allow them to be used in optical applications. Common host materials include glasses [18,19] and polymers [20,21]. To activate the ions dissolved in an insulator and form a metal-insulator composite, the ions must first be reduced to atoms.…”

“…Using solution processing, the production of silver-polymer composites also becomes relatively straightforward. Various polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) [17,23], polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) [6,20], polyethylene oxide (PEO) [11], and gelatin [21] have been used in the past as hosts for silver ions. Polymers can generally dissolve large quantities of silver, but they lack stability when compared to glass.…”
