Multiple carcinosarcomas of the kidney: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Abstract. Carcinosarcomas are biphasic tumors comprising epithelial and mesenchymal components. Primary carcinosarcoma of the kidney is extremely uncommon and accounts for <1% of all malignant renal tumors. Primary carcinosarcoma of the kidney generally occurs after the age of 60 and the majority of the patients are men. This is the case report of a 56-year-old male patient who presented with left flank pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) revealed ureterohydronephrosis and a left distal ureteral… Show more

“…Due to the complexity of the case and the lack of evidence, an MDT discussion and a careful counseling of the patient become mandatory to design further management and follow-up. Considering the very poor oncological outcomes reported in similar cases, 4,5 with the early tendency to develop metastasis, in agreement with the patient we decided to go for an adjuvant chemotherapy.…”

“…What is known from the few published cases is that regardless of the type of the primary and adjuvant treatments, the prognosis is poor, with the reported longest survival of about 2 years. 4 We present the case of a patient who has undergone a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with a histological diagnosis of carcinosarcoma and the following management at a 3.5 years' follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second reported case of carcinosarcoma of the kidney parenchyma with malignant degeneration of both epithelial and mesenchymal components.…”

“…The term “carcinosarcoma” or “sarcomatoid carcinoma” refers to biphasic states in which both the epithelial and sarcomatous components coexist. The frequency of carcinosarcoma is very low, less than 1% of all lung or kidney malignancies [ 31 , 32 ]. In contrast, in cases of mesothelioma, the biphasic type represents as much as 20% of all cases [ 16 18 ].…”
