Multiple chronic conditions and healthcare costs among adults

Abstract: The prevalence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) is increasing among individuals of all ages. MCC are associated with poor health outcomes. The presence of MCC has profound healthcare utilization and cost implications for public and private insurance payers, individuals, and families. Investigators have used a variety of definitions for MCC to evaluate costs associated with MCC. The objective of this article is to examine the current literature in estimating excess costs associated with MCC among adults. Th… Show more

“…As a consequence of population growth as well as a larger elderly population living with multimorbidity and disability, healthcare and societal costs have steadily risen over recent decades in industrialized countries [16]. These rising costs threaten the sustainability of healthcare systems, and force policy-makers and financial stakeholders to make difficult decisions on how to allocate scarce resources [17].…”

“…1 Furthermore, the presence of multimorbidity results in substantial health care spending. 2 Older adults with multimorbidity who are transitioning home after a hospital admission are particularly vulnerable to fragmented care, as they typically receive services from numerous providers who lack a common system for coordin ation and communication. There is limited evidence on how best to provide well-coordinated transitional care to older adults with multimorbidity and depressive symptoms.…”

“…The Vuong test was also performed to compare the zero‐inflated negative binomial model and standard negative binomial model and tested for over‐dispersion to compare the negative binomial model with the Poisson model. For easier interpretation of parameter estimates without smearing correction, we utilized the generalized linear model (GLM) with the log‐link function and gamma error distribution to evaluate the relationship between total medical costs and oral antidiabetic drug adherence. Absolute difference in dollars between adherence and non‐adherence was equal to the incremental change by exponentiating parameter estimates .…”
