Multiple congenital epitrichial sweat gland hamartomas in a piglet

Abstract: A case of multiple congenital epitrichial sweat gland hamartomas in a 2-day-old piglet is presented. The skin lesions were raised, ovoid to linear in configuration, alopecic, red-purple to pink, and cauliflower-like to cerebriform in appearance. Histological examination of skin specimens confirmed a diagnosis of epitrichial sweat gland hamartoma. Complete necropsy examination revealed no other lesions.

“…Although hamartomas are much more common in humans (11) and dogs (3,5), with several stages and histopathological differentiations, they were reported in swine. Previous reports of fibroepithelial (10) and an epitrichial sweat gland (2) hamartomas in piglets describe them as cauliflower-like masses in the head (10) or head, neck, and shoulder (2). Therefore, congenital cutaneous hamartoma can be grossly similar to the fibropapilloma described in this study.…”

“…Vascular hamartoma has also been diagnosed in small ruminants (3,40). Sweat gland hamartoma was reported in a newborn piglet (19). A unique hamartoma consisting of pancreatic and hepatic cells was recently found in a 7-year-old pig, which is the first case of pancreatic hamartoma reported in an animal (75).…”

“…Among those are pressure-induced injuries due to inappropriate flooring, which include calluses, focal skin necrosis, claw fissures and erosions, decubitus ulcers, and "bursitis." 1,2 Strictly speaking, bursitis means inflammation of a bursa, which is a small sac-like cavity lined with a synovial membrane and filled with synovial fluid. 3 Bursae are physiologically located around joints and serve to decrease friction where muscles and tendons glide over bones.…”
