Multiple Crosslinking Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels with Improved Strength and 3D Printability

Abstract: Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel is preferred for biomedicine applications, as it possesses biodegradability, biocompatibility, and cell-regulated capacity as well as high hydration nature similar to the native extracellular matrix. However, HA hydrogel fabricated via a 3D printing technique often faces poor printing properties. In this study, maleiated sodium hyaluronate (MHA) with a high substituted degree of the acrylate group (i.e., 2.27) and thiolated sodium hyaluronate (SHHA) were synthesized. By blending t… Show more

“…HA hydrogels containing a mixture of hyaluronan, collagen and matrigel could provide a similar ECM stiffness as mimicking the in vivo elasticity modulus of brain condition, which is further applying a better model for evaluating the malignancy of glioma [ 168 ]. With additional linkage reagents and other components of ECM, the model could repeat the ideal matrix for cultivating cells [ 175 ]. In chitosan-hyaluronan membrane-derived 3D culture models, the stemness phenotype is largely amplified as rapidly growing to tumor spheroids, increasing invasion and interstitialization.…”

“…Various studies on HA modifications, such as methacrylated hyaluronic acid (MHA), dopamine-modified HA (HA-DA), HA-tyramine, thiolated hyaluronic acid (SHHA), catechol-HA, etc., have been reported for bioprinting of 3D tissue constructs . Wan et al used multiple cross-linking approaches to produce HA-based bioinks to print cellular constructs without incorporating other polymeric compositions . Two different HA modifications, i.e., MHA (formed by a ring-opening reaction between the OH group of HA and methacrylic anhydride) and SHHA, showed rapid pre-gelation and post-gelation kinetics.…”
