Multiple double layers in a glow discharge

Abstract: The formation of visible layered structures that develop at the anodic zone of a constricted glow discharge is reported. They are composed of several tridimensional double layers with axial symmetry enclosing different plasma coronas. The dependence of the number and size of plasma shells with the conditions of the discharge is discussed, as well as the nature of these double layers. The experimental results evidence the effect of the distribution of neutrals in the volume of the discharge for the development … Show more

“…They are employed to measure the space dependent properties of plasma plumes produced by ion thrusters or the plasma potential profile of double layers [6]. Their spatial resolutions is essentially limited by the plasma Debye length λ D and physical size of the probe d and they are usually employed when λ D /d…”

“…Laboratory experiments and space tests [1][2][3][4][5] with hollowcathode based plasma contactors suggest that external ionization of neutral gas can have a leading role in determining their current-voltage (C-V) response, in particular, in the so-called ignited regime. This regime is characterized by ͑i͒ a C-V characteristic with a strong enhancement of the electrical current at a nearly constant contactor voltage, and ͑ii͒ a plasma structure consisting of a glowing plasma plume ͑or core͒ around the contactor, separated by a space-charge sheath, the double layer ͑DL͒, from the background plasma ͑or presheath͒.…”

“…M ULTIPLE double layers are complex nonlinear potential structures in plasma, consisting of two or more subsequent double layers [1]- [4]. It appears as several bright and concentric plasma shells attached to the anode of a glow discharge or to a positively biased electrode that is immersed into plasma.…”

“…It appears as several bright and concentric plasma shells attached to the anode of a glow discharge or to a positively biased electrode that is immersed into plasma. The axial profile of the plasma potential has a stair steps shape, with potential jumps close to the ionization potential of the used gas [1], [3]. At high values of the potential applied to the anode (or the supplementary electrode), the multiple double layers evolve into a dynamic state, consisting of periodic disruptions and reaggregations of the constituent double layers [3].…”
