The gas-phase, iron and cobalt cyclooctatetraene cluster anions, [Fe(1,2)(COT)](-) and [Co(COT)](-), were generated using a laser vaporization source and studied using mass spectrometry and anion photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory was employed to compute the structures and spin multiplicities of these cluster anions as well as those of their corresponding neutrals. Both experimental and theoretically predicted electron affinities and photodetachment transition energies are in good agreement, authenticating the structures and spin multiplicities predicted by theory. The implied spin magnetic moments of these systems suggest that [Fe(COT)], [Fe(2)(COT)], and [Co(COT)] retain the magnetic moments of the Fe atom, the Fe(2) dimer, and the Co atom, respectively. Thus, the interaction of these transition metal, atomic and dimeric moieties with a COT molecule does not quench their magnetic moments, leading to the possibility that these combinations may be useful in forming novel magnetic materials.

One of the most appealing aspects of cluster science while it was still in its infancy was the simplicity of the objects studied. More recently, cluster beam experimentalists have begun to direct their interest to more complex condensates which might better be called cluster assemblies. Adsorption ofC60on nickel clusters at high temperature

The adsorption of C 60 on nickel clusters has been studied in a flow-tube reactor at temperatures between 823 and 1073 K. Saturation coverages of C 60 have been determined for Ni 2 -Ni 72 and show a size dependence consistent with C 60 adsorption on essentially spherical Ni n clusters. There is no evidence for C 60 decomposition. The configuration of the adsorbed C 60 molecules appears to change from tetrahed-ral→octahedral→cubic→less symmetrical arrangements as metal cluster size increases. An RRK modeling of the first C 60 that binds to the nickel clusters yields a binding energy in excess of 2.06 eV. The binding energy appears to decrease with decreasing metal nuclearity of the binding site, with binding to atop sites on the Ni n clusters being relatively weak. It is argued that electron transfer to the C 60 ligands is limited by charging of the central Ni n core and that this may provide a way of controlling the extent of electron transfer to the adsorbed molecules.
