Multiple fibro-osseous lesions of the jaws: A report of a rare case with a literature review

Abstract: Fibro-osseous lesions are a poorly defined category of conditions affecting the jaws and craniofacial bones, and include developmental lesions, reactive or dysplastic lesions, and neoplasms. Fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma are the 2 main types of fibro-osseous lesions affecting the jaw, and ossifying fibroma is a true benign neoplasm of the bone-forming tissues with several well-recognized variants ranging from innocuous to extensively aggressive lesions. However, multiple simultaneous fibro-osseous le… Show more

“…The treatment of JTOF and JPOF is complete resection, although recurrence is higher than in COF. Seventy percent of OF involve the mandible, with 22% found in the molar region of the maxilla, the ethmoids, orbital regions, and rarely the petrous bone [1]. OF commonly occurs as a solitary lesion, although rarely seen in multiple sites or shows multiple, familial, or sequential presentations [1].…”

“…They encompass two major lesions: fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a definite form of benign fibro-osseous tumor affecting the craniofacial region (70%), principally in the jaws [ 1 , 2 ]. Most individuals are diagnosed in their second or third decades of life [ 3 , 4 ], and it is more common in women than in men in the ratio of 4:1 [ 5 ].…”

“…Fibro-osseous lesions of the maxilla and mandible includes fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma (OF), florid osseous dysplasia, cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), and focal osseous dysplasia. [ 1 2 ] Peripheral OF are seen as a benign tumor, and may be sessile or pedunculated growth, most commonly affecting the maxilla as compared to the mandible. It arises from the interdental papillae of the maxillary gingiva.…”
