“…In this study, we describe a reliable method to induce final oocyte maturation in the Surubí, P. fasciatum , using ovaprim at the recommended dosage (0.5 mL kg −1 ). This result further supports the finding that the combination of LH‐RHa and an anti‐dopamine factor, here domperidone, is a potent inductor of final oocyte maturation in a broad range of fish species (Lin, van der Kraak, Liang, Peng, Li, Lu, Zhou, Chang & Peter 1986; Peter, Lin & Van der Kraak 1988) and particularly in catfish species (De Leeuw, Goos, Richter & Eding 1985; Goos, Joy, De Leeuw, Van Oordt, Van Delft & Gielen 1987; Richter, Eding, Goos, De Leeuw, Scott & Van Oordt 1987; Legendre, Linhart & Billard 1996; Alok, Krishnan, Talwar & Garg 1998). One of the advantages over carp pituitary extract (CPE), which is frequently used in fish farms, is that the biological activity of ovaprim or other LH‐RHa preparations is standardized and constant if the products are stored properly.…”

“…Multiple spawning is an effective strategy to improve the seed supplies in aquatic animals (Deoraj et al, 1998;Mcevoy & Mcevoy, 2006). In this study, with the same feeding rate (1%) and protein level (40%), the rates of fertilization and hatching were lower in the second spawning compared with the first spawning.…”

“…Clarias dussumieri has very high consumer preference as a food fish with medicinal and nutraceutical properties due to the presence of high concentration of physiologically available iron, necessary for the synthesis of haemoglobin and essential amino acids (Padmakumar et al 2004). Much of the research in India, has been centred on the breeding and propagation of Clarias magur (Sahoo et al 2008) and Heteropneustes fossilis (Alok et al 1998;Bindu et al 2009), and little work has been carried out on C. dussumieri (Padmakumar et al 2004;Aneesh et al 2013). Owing to their close morphological similarity with C. magur, the species is often wrongly identified and reported in publications implying their abundance.…”
