Multiple intestinal malignancies and prolonged survival in a young woman

Abstract

An unusual case of long srrruiual after multiple primary gastrointestinal malignancies is reported. A 30-yearold woman developed a carcinoma of the cardiac region oj her stomach with local extension to the oesophagus; 11 years following limited resection she is alive and well. During the infervening period she developed three separate predominantly poorly differentiated cancers of the colon and anorher in the rectum. Lymph node metastases were present in association with the first colonic carcinoma; local involvement of the uterus and pericolic veins was observed wirh the rectal turnour. Factors known to influence the prognosis of' gastric and colonic carcinomas are briefly reviewed.
