Multiple origins of the western European house mouse in the Aeolian Archipelago: clues from mtDNA and chromosomes

Abstract: The expansion of Mus musculus domesticus from its origin has been studied in detail. The colonization routes and times depended on its commensal habits which favoured a rapid and recent dispersal, making it difficult to unravel the expansion pattern. The situation is still obscure in the central Mediterranean area. Mitochondrial D-loop was sequenced for 65 mice from the Aeolian Archipelago and the sixteen haplotypes identified were compared with the 528 available mouse haplotypes. The central Mediterranean phy… Show more

“…All 40 D-loop sequences (731 bp) from this study were aligned with 119 sequences from Senegal (including five sequences from DAK), published by Lippens et al (2017), and with 1958 sequences retrieved from GenBank: 1672 whose references were compiled in Lippens et al (2017) and 168 published in other studies (Castiglia et al, 2005;Förster et al, 2009;Gabriel et al, 2011;García-Rodríguez et al, 2018;Jones, Jóhannesdóttir, et al, 2011;Jones, Skirnisson, et al, 2012;King, 2016;MacKay et al, 2013;Solano et al, 2013;Storz et al, 2007). Sequences alignment was performed using the Clustal W multiple alignment in Bioedit v7.2.6 software (Hall, 1999).…”

“…(one from Pantelleria and two from Lampedusa) have been extracted from body muscle preserved in 96% ethanol by salting out procedure (Aljanabi & Martinez, 1997). Two mitochondrial fragments were amplified for the two genera in order to produce sequences comparable to the ones available in GenBank and previous works (Solano et al, 2013). Obtained sequences were checked, edited, and aligned with Geneious v4.8.3 (Biomatter).…”

“…The 822 bp long fragments obtained are made available in GenBank (Accession numbers will be provided upon acceptance: XXX). The resulting haplotypes were combined with the dataset used by Solano et al (2013) which included 183 haplotypes from all the Mediterranean basin and northern Europe including Africa, and previous haplotypes from Pantelleria (N = 1) and Lampedusa (N = 2). Moreover, further genetic sequences available on GenBank and belonging to haplotypes from other small central Mediterranean islands (Linosa, Malta, and the seven Aeolian islands) and Sicily have also been included.…”
