Multiple Recurrent Malignant Solitary Fibrous Tumors: Long-Term Follow-Up of 24 Years

Abstract: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura is a rare, generally benign, neoplasm that accounts for less than 5% of all pleural tumors. However, 10% to 30% of SFTs display aggressive behavior with local recurrence, malignant transformation, and distant metastasis. We report a case of multiple recurrent SFTs of the thorax in a 77-year-old Korean woman. During a 24-year period, she underwent six surgical resections for six recurrent SFTs. The tumor eventually underwent morphologically malignant transformation. Th… Show more

“…This behavior also justifies an aggressive surgical strategy where redo resection should be performed in all cases in which it is reasonably possible. Our long-term results on the four redo surgery cases, in line with others, 15,31 support this attitude.…”

“…Surgical resection with histological free margins is the standard treatment for SFTP including different types of resection, which could be achieved by video-assisted thoracic surgery for small tumors and by open thoracotomy for large tumors [21]. Redo surgery for local recurrence for more than one time after complete resection can occur and after variable lengths of time such as up to 20 years after the primary excision [22,23].…”

“…The clinical course is usually indolent, and prognosis is favorable if complete resection is possible. However, it has been reported that 10-30% of SFTPs are malignant [1,2]. We present a case of malignant SFTP, which was successfully treated by complete resection.…”
