Multiple roles of CD90 in cancer

Abstract: THY1 (CD90) is a 25-37-kDa heavily N-glycosylated, glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchored cell surface protein. It is usually expressed on thymocytes, mesenchymal stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, natural killer cells, neurons, endothelial cells, renal glomerular mesangial cells, follicular dendritic cells, fibroblasts, and myofibroblasts. It has been found to regulate cell adhesion, migration, apoptosis, axon growth, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, T-cell activation, and fibrosis. Several report… Show more

“…In our experiments, FBS-free culture conditions did not only lead to reduced transfer of CD73 towards the cell membrane in immunocytochemistry images, but also led to a lesser abundance of CD73 mRNA. A lesser abundance in FBS-free media was similarly observed for CD90, which is also involved in the regulation of cell adhesion, migration, cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions [Kumar et al, 2016]. Collectively, these results suggest that FBS-free culture medium impairs the expression of stem cell adhesion molecules and, as shown for CD73, their presence on the cell surface.…”

“…Although a clear significant interaction could not be demonstrated, it was interesting observing that a high infiltration of CD8a cells was only associated with a better prognosis within the CD90-dominant patient cluster. The role of CD90-positive fibroblasts in cancer progression and especially immune cell regulation is still mostly unknown and occasional reports are contradicting 57 especially with regard to their potential antigen presenting functions [46][47][48] . However, the given observations from this study support the hypothesis of functional differences between fibroblast subsets and experimental studies addressing this point would therefore be of high interest.…”
