“…Regarding the level of evidence, the nine case reports [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] were categorized as level 4, and the six case series were categorized as level 3, 3,4,17 4, 18 or 5. 19,20 Thirty-eight individuals met the inclusion criteria for sporadic schwannomatosis (►Table 2). For the largest case series by MacCollin et al, 4 we removed 5 of 14 cases because they did not meet the inclusion criteria (three patients < 30 years of age, two with familial disease, and one with NF2).…”

“…5 Studies have shown a disproportionately greater incidence of schwannomas in the upper extremities (the head and neck, involving the spinal nerves and the brachial plexus), which is double that of those in the lower extremity; this is in contrast with neurofibromas, which are equally distributed throughout the nervous system. 5,6 Only 1 to 3% of the schwannomas occur in the pelvis. In addition, the involvement of the Resultados e Discussão Somente os artigos publicados entre os anos de 1981 e 2019, estudos envolvendo humanos e que estavam disponíveis como artigos completos, foram selecionados para a revisão.…”

“…A schwannoma is a benign nerve sheath tumor arising from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system. They tend to be isolated, slow-growing, and well-encapsulated neoplasms that form within the perineurium [1-5]. An exception to this is when they are associated with neurofibromatosis.…”

“…Schwannomas most commonly occur in the head and neck region involving the spinal nerves and the brachial plexus. They are a rare occurrence in the lower extremities, particularly in the foot and ankle, with the most common nerve affected being the posterior tibial nerve [2-5,7-9]. Solitary schwannomas can present as an asymptomatic lump or cause compressive neuropathy due to a mass effect and displacement of nerve bundles.…”
